Due to a variety of circumstances
only Fran and I ended up going to Walli. This was not a total disaster as it
allowed us to re-acquaint ourselves with the area and particularly the cave locations.
We left Wollongong about 3 pm on Friday afternoon going by way of Campbelltown,
Penrith and over the mountain. We got caught in the afternoon
peak hour which did slow us down somewhat. Also is worth noting that for the
next couple of years I think, Mt Victoria pass will be closed most nights
necessitating a detour to get to Lithgow. Fortunately, we got down the pass
before it was closed and had a quick run to Bathurst, were we stopped for
dinner at a totally forgettable restaurant. Ultimately, we arrived at Walli
about 10pm on Friday night. Surprisingly, it was very warm and clear which is
unusual for Walli. We pitched a leanto off the car and settled down to sleep -
disturbed only by the rising of an incredibly bright moon about 2am.
On Saturday morning we arose about 8am and whilst Fran did a little Bathurst bur gardening, the campsite is infested by the rotten stuff and all visitors are requested to pull up a couple of dozen plants and BURN them - seeds and all. After Fran's pyrotechnic exercise we wandered off and relocated the cave entrances taking detailed notes to ensure there will be no delays when we return later in the year. We left Walli about 10.30am taking the opportunity to update our directions. The rest of the weekend we spent wandering around the local towns and sights. To return home we came back via Cawra, Booroowa and Yass. The trip took about the same time as up and over the Blue Mountains but there was a lot less traffic and would be much quicker if there was a lot of traffic over the mountains. We would suggest this route for future trips to Walli or Cliefdon.
